Costa Calida, Spain

Overview:

La Manga photo This Spanish resort lies on the southeast coast of Spain, just 5 miles east of Cartagena. It is situated 45 miles southeast of Murcia and 65 miles south of Alicante. The airport at San Javier is 40 miles by road, southeast of Murcia. La Manga stretches north from the Cabo de Palos. It is situated in such a way that it seems to be dividing the Mediterranean Sea from the inland sea of Mar Menor. Farther along the coast, you will find another independent resort called La Manga Club. This occupies an elevated, sloping land, surrounded by hills. La Manga del Mar Menor is a narrow, mainly flat strip of land 15 miles long. La Manga literally means "the Sleeve" and rightly named because of its shape. La Manga developed largely from the 1980s onwards. You will discover that there is an apparent absence of overall planning, with a complete mixture of architectural styles in many of the structures. You will find accommodation ranging from budget apartments to luxurious beachfront villas. The main road runs through the entire length of the resort, and is a dual carriageway in parts. Look out for the one-way sections in certain places. However, this road is very well maintained with signposts. You will see interestingly-shaped surfboard-like markers punctuating the road at every kilometre. The other resort, La Manga Club, just 8 miles southwest, has its own identity. It is a vast, up market sports and golf complex on 1,400 acres. Needless to say, you will find it well equipped, self-contained, with its own full range of amenities. You will see a wide choice of accommodation, ranging from 5-star hotels to privately owned apartments. The resort has a more British atmosphere, as the British own most apartments. La Manga suits all budgets and all age groups, families, couples and singles. If you like indulging in sports, both on land and water, this is the place for you. You will find that La Manga attracts mainly the middle market Spanish, with the German, French and British in the minority. The neighbouring resort La Manga Club offers a wide choice of sporting facilities and golf courses. It attracts a range of ages, including families. Also, if you are a nature lover, birdwatcher or a history buff, you may like to visit this place. A word of caution though, the steep hills may be tough on those with walking difficulties.
